Carey was once a popular fashion model. She stands almost 5'10" tall, and was sought-after by the famous American fashion designers like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and others. Her father, a distinguished scientist, who was awarded the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of the Year prize, is a highly respected geoscientist. Carey's father was a scientist who travelled the globe as a part of his professional career. After she graduated from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, she began to model on the side. It caught the attention of an agent at Ford Model Agency New York. Following her move to France, where she briefly lived at Paris, Bordeaux and New York and then New York, she made the decision that she would return to New York and continue her education. Soon, Vogue, Glamour and others featured her on their covers. As she modeled, she continued to study at a full-time level for a literary major in New York University. When she arrived in New York she began to pursue acting. In 1986, she made her debut on stage with a small character on the show "Club Paradise" in the film "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams. She spends her free time doing white-water rafting, skiing, windsurfing, and rock climbing.
